Overview: The CyManII Approach

CyManII’s approach is to develop and deploy advanced, AI-driven cyber defense capabilities to secure U.S. manufacturing and bolster U.S manufacturing competitiveness.

CyManII’s cyber defense capabilities are critical for the United State to be a global leader in manufacturing and guarantee U.S. national and economic security. Our focus on developing and deploying industrial “cyber-physical resilience,” or CPR, will lead the way for U.S. manufacturers to increase their production capacity while lowering production costs.

Adversaries target American manufacturing to steal intellectual property, disrupt production, and erode U.S. industrial leadership. CyManII, backed by the Department of Energy and its national laboratories, secures U.S. manufacturing infrastructure and supply chains to strengthen American manufacturing competitiveness.

Secure U.S. manufacturing: Deploy technologies that protect factories and manufacturing industrial systems from evolving nation-state and criminal threats.

Lead in secure AI: Protect AI-enabled smart manufacturing by using AI to detect and address cyber weaknesses and vulnerability instances on industrial systems faster than adversaries can adapt.

Protect strategic supply chains: Safeguard critical minerals, materials, and components with a focus on the small and medium-sized manufacturers that make up most of the industrial base.

Modernize the American workforce: Prepare today’s manufacturing workers and the next generation to run and defend intelligent factories, countering adversaries’ use of AI while using AI to build cyber-physical resilience.

Why it Matters

America’s industrial strength depends on manufacturers who can innovate, produce, and deliver without interference from adversaries. CyManII designs security into manufacturing from the ground up, so that legacy and next-generation systems are secure by design, not by patch.

CyManII’s work delivers:

Stronger competitiveness: Manufacturers protect the intellectual property and uptime that set them apart in global markets.

Secure strategic supply chains: Safer production of critical minerals, materials, and components, from the largest OEMs to the smallest suppliers.

Trusted AI adoption: Manufacturers can deploy AI and automation knowing it strengthens their defenses rather than creating new risk.

A common security foundation: Shared frameworks and technologies, such as the Cyber-Physical Passport, that OEMs, suppliers, and integrators can build on.

A ready workforce: Workers trained to run and defend modern, intelligent factories, including against adversaries who use AI.

Together, these secure U.S. leadership in manufacturing for decades to come.

Benefits

These benefits will secure and sustain U.S. leadership in global manufacturing competitiveness for our current and future decades. Via our ε-PURE secure manufacturing architecture, CyManII also introduces a novel ε-ROI for companies to implement a secure measurement and verification across the nation’s automated manufacturing operations and their supply chains. By introducing a system-by-system design for manufacturing systems and supply chains, CyManII will introduce cybersecurity that yields ROI which would allow CyManII to:

  • Innovate before competitors
  • Secure U.S. manufactures
  • Increase global competition
  • Maintain close connection with industry giants
  • Provide a common framework for secure manufacturing
  • Create a strong foundation for research and innovation
  • Promote a culture of trust and proactive education, training and support for all stakeholders

CyManII is on the path toward establishing expectations for quality security that will be followed and highly respected by OEMs, SMMs, OTs and integrators to help them achieve secure energy savings by overcoming common barriers and re-establish the United States as a proactive global innovator for manufacturing, cybersecurity and energy dominance; attaining cyber innovation to secure U.S. manufacturing.

Lead Institution

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is home to one of the nation’s top cybersecurity programs, an interdisciplinary approach that spans three colleges: the College of Business, College of Engineering and College of Sciences, and has attracted world-class faculty and a reputation as the undisputed leader in cybersecurity education.

With three cyber-focused research centers – the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security, the Institute for Cyber Security and the Cyber Center for Security and Analytics – and with close cross-collaborations with the Open Cloud Institute (OCI) and the Texas Energy Research Institute, which aims to address global security challenges encountered by individuals, industry, government and the military. The university’s research specialties include information security management and strategy, applied network and information systems security, government and industry cyber preparedness, and secure software and hardware design and engineering.

UTSA has also launched its $100M investment in this ecosystem via the National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC) in the heart of downtown San Antonio.
